Prepare your wall

Make sure the wall is clean, dry, and free of grease and dust before you begin. A smooth, clean surface ensures that the paint adheres properly and that your lines remain crisp. Apply a coat of primer to the wall in the color of your choice and let it dry thoroughly. Save a small amount of paint, as you’ll need it later for touch-ups and highlights.
Planning: Measure the available space and determine the position of the fish on the wall.
Color selection: Make color swatches (e.g., A4 size) and tape them to the wall to see how light and space affect the colors.

1: Draw your design and cut out the stencil

Choose a fish as a reference and draw it life-size on a large sheet of paper. Cut out the shape and cut the fin and eye separately as individual pieces, so you can position them independently on the wall later.

2: Transfer the stencil to the wall

Secure the stencil in the desired spot with painter’s tape. Then trace the outlines of the fish, fin, and eye with the black acrylic marker to create a clean line drawing on the wall.

3: Mix your color and paint in the shape

Mix a mid-tone gray with a small amount of blue. Use this to loosely paint the shape of the fish within the outline. Aim for a recognizable shape, not exact precision. Experiment with different shades of gray.

4: Add details and shading

Use black to define the head and add the stripes on the back, the eye, and the fin. Then dab a lighter shade of your base color onto the belly and inside the eye, and blend the transitions with a dry brush or sponge for an organic, weathered effect.

5: Finish with fine lines and highlights

Use the black acrylic marker to refine fine details. Finally, add highlights with white, especially in the eye, to give the fish depth and life.

6: Evaluate the final result

Step back and take a critical look at your mural one last time. Make any necessary touch-ups. Then arrange your furniture in the desired spots and enjoy your creation.
