Techniques for Transferring Your Design onto the Wall.

Whether you’re creating your own mural or working from a reference, there are several ways to transfer your design neatly, accurately, and in the right proportions. Below are the most accessible and practical methods.

Read all techniques

1. Tracing with paper

This is the technique if you want to perfect your design on paper first.

How it works:

  • Draw or print your design on a large sheet of paper.
  • Trace the lines using a pastel.
  • Tape the paper to the wall with the pastel side facing the wall.
  • Trace the lines again, this time with a pencil.
  • Remove the paper.
  • The design is now visible on the wall.
  • Paint in the shapes.

When is this helpful

  • When you don’t want to draw freehand (yet)
  • For precise shapes and illustrations
  • When you want to “practice” on paper before committing to the wall

2. The grid technique

The grid technique is perfect when you want to enlarge an existing design or get it onto the wall in perfect proportions. Without any technical tools.

How it works:

  • Draw a grid on your design.
    For example: 2×2 cm squares.
  • Draw the same grid on your wall, but larger.
    For example: 20×20 cm squares.
  • Look at what happens inside each square of the original design and transfer it square by square onto the wall.
  • Work slowly from one square to the next so everything stays in proportion.
  • Later, simply wipe away the grid lines with a microfiber cloth.

Why is this so useful?

  • It’s much easier than trying to “get everything right in one go.”
  • Large shapes stay perfectly proportional.
  • The workflow stays organize. You never get “lost” in your composition.
  • Suitable for both geometric and organic designs.

Who is it for?

Beginners and advanced creators, this technique is almost foolproof.

3. Using a Projector

The projector technique is perfect when you want to transfer a design exactly as it is, no sketching or measuring needed.

How it works:

  • Project your design onto the wall at the size you want.
  • Position your projector securely (a stack of books works great).
  • Dim the lights so the design is clearly visible.
  • Trace the lines with soft pastel or a light pencil.
  • Start painting once you’re happy with the setup.

Why does this work so well?

  • You can transfer a complex design onto your wall incredibly fast.
  • No calculations or enlarging required.
  • Everything stays exactly like the original design.
